Richard Chongo
Richard Chongo is a seasoned development leader with over 15 years of executive experience driving large-scale, high-impact programs across Malawi and the African region. He brings a rare combination of strategic foresight and operational execution, having designed and scaled transformative rural development models that empower smallholder farmers through sustainable, cost-efficient approaches. His work operates at the intersection of agribusiness, financial inclusion, and digital innovation, where he has consistently translated complex development challenges into structured, scalable solutions with measurable outcomes.
Richard is widely recognized for his strength in strategic partnerships and capital mobilization, having secured and managed multimillion-dollar funding from governments and leading international development partners. His ability to align diverse stakeholders, including public sector institutions, NGOs, and financial systems has enabled the successful delivery of integrated, cross-sector programs. As Country Director of Opportunity International Malawi, he led the organization’s strategic repositioning into a nationally trusted development partner, significantly expanding its funding base, program reach, and institutional credibility.
In addition to his executive leadership, Richard contributes at a systems level as Co-Chairperson of the International NGOs Forum in Malawi, influencing national dialogue on sustainable, locally led development. His advisory and consultancy engagements, including work with IFAD and other institutions, further reinforce his role as a trusted expert in program design, financial inclusion, and resilience-building for vulnerable populations. He holds an MBA from Unicaf University, a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Malawi, and professional certifications in microfinance and development practice.
