Project Information
Strengthening livestock and rural livelihoods.
We support community-based poultry and agricultural enterprises with the tools they need to grow and succeed.
Nsaru Poultry Production Initiative
The Nsaru Poultry Production Initiative is an ongoing community-based livestock project supported by the Kwela Development Fund to strengthen rural livelihoods through structured poultry farming. The initiative provides financial support, productive assets, and practical technical guidance to a poultry farmers group in Nsaru Extension Planning Area (EPA), enabling them to operate as a more organized and sustainable micro-enterprise.
By combining access to financing with input support and mentorship, the project is designed to move farmers from small-scale, irregular activity into more consistent and income-generating production systems. The initiative forms part of Kwela’s broader pilot program supporting community enterprises through group-based lending and hands-on business support tailored to rural conditions.
Implementation has focused on ensuring that financial support translates directly into productive use. The group has been supported with a refrigeration unit for proper vaccine storage, access to poultry inputs such as chicks and feed, and structured loan financing aligned with short production cycles. In addition, financial orientation and ongoing mentorship have been provided to strengthen group coordination and enterprise management.
Project Challenge
Poultry farmers in Nsaru face a number of structural challenges that limit their ability to grow and sustain their businesses. Limited access to affordable financing restricts their ability to invest in inputs, while reliance on informal lenders increases financial pressure and risk.
In addition, poor vaccine storage and handling contributes to high chick mortality, reducing productivity and profitability. Gaps in technical knowledge and limited access to extension support further constrain the ability of farmers to maintain consistent production cycles and operate as structured enterprises.
- Limited access to affordable and structured financing
- High poultry mortality due to poor vaccine storage
- Inconsistent production cycles due to input constraints
- Limited technical knowledge and enterprise structure
Project Implementation & Early Progress
The Nsaru Poultry Production Initiative is currently active and continues to support the beneficiary group through a combination of asset financing, input provision, and technical guidance. The introduction of refrigeration has improved vaccine handling and poultry health management, while access to inputs has enabled more consistent production cycles.
Through group-based financing and training, the farmers are beginning to operate with improved coordination, clearer structure, and better financial discipline. The project has also strengthened linkages with local extension support systems, improving access to practical knowledge and guidance.
This initiative forms part of a broader Kwela Development Fund pilot portfolio that has supported over 300 beneficiaries, the majority of whom are women, with active participation from youth groups. The portfolio includes multiple community enterprises across agriculture, trade, and services, demonstrating early traction of the model in rural settings.
As part of this portfolio, the Nsaru Poultry Production Initiative contributes to building sustainable, community-based enterprises through structured financing and ongoing support.
